DJ Kicks reintroduces 12-inch series w. John Talabot

DJ Kicks reintroduces 12-inch series w. John Talabot
24.02.2015

The 2013 tune "Without You" will be issued with a fresh batch of remixes.

DJ-Kicks has reintroduced its 12-inch series, beginning with the John Talabot track "Without You."

"Without You" first appeared on John Talabot's 2013 DJ-Kicks mix, and has never seen an official release. Due out March 23rd, it'll arrive backed by remixes from Thomas Melchior as Melchior Productions Ltd, Oskar Offermann and Hivern Discs artist Mistakes Are Okay.

Overseen by !K7, DJ-Kicks is known primarily as a mix CD series—the most recent installment came from Nina Kraviz. Though it's been dormant for a couple of years, the 12-inch series has traditionally featured an exclusive track from the artist who compiled a DJ-Kicks mix.

Listen to the original version of "Without You" here.

RA Sessions: Magic Mountain High

RA Sessions: Magic Mountain High
23.02.2015

Move D and Juju & Jordash, live and improvised at fabric.

When Move D and Juju & Jordash first started playing together a few years ago, their group, Magic Mountain High, quickly became one of the most captivating new live acts in electronic music.
It's not hard to see why—their grooves are crafty, their sounds wonderfully immersive. But there's something more fundamental setting Magic Mountain High apart: all of their sets are totally improvised. This makes them sound different from night to night (sometimes more clubby, sometimes more ambient), but always loose, unpredictable and organic.
It also makes them a lot of fun to watch. Magic Mountain High's nest of gear looks like the cockpit of some ramshackle spacecraft, one whose scruffy crew move around like a jazz trio—nodding away, lost in their instruments, only occasionally speaking or even looking at each other.

Westbam classic gets reissued and remixed
19.02.2015

Smallpeople and Gerd Janson have been tapped to remix the 2002 cut.

A new label called Fuck Reality will reissue Westbam's "Oldschool Baby (Piano Mix)" with remixes from Smallpeople and Gerd Janson.

Several versions of "Oldschool Baby" were released in 2002, but the "Piano Mix" is the best known. Physical copies of the track, which features vocals from Nena Kerner, are extremely rare, making it one of the most sought-after Westbam cuts ever produced. The German was a key player in the rise of Berlin techno (he organised the first Berlin Mayday rave, and frequently played at seminal venues UFO and E-Werk), and though he remains fairly detached from the city's club circuit today, Westbam's influence over electronic music in Germany remains.

The forthcoming package features a remastered version of "Oldschool Baby (Piano Mix)", along with reworks from Smallpeople and Gerd Janson. Samples are streaming here.

Sixteen dates in support of Live At Robert Johnson's forthcoming Lifesaver 2 compilation have been announced.

The tour will see a rotating cast of the Frankfurt label's core artists touch down for slots in the UK, France, Paris, Netherlands, Spain and more. Four dates are lined up for April. Paris's Djoon club hosts Ata and Lauer on the 17th, after which Hafenbauer and Benedikt Frey head to Golem in Hamburg on the 24th. Dates at Barcelona venue Nitsa on the 25th and Passage 46 in Freiburg, Germany, on the 30th round out the month: Ata, Lauer and Frey play the former, while The Citizen's Band, Hafenbauer and Holger Wuest soundtrack the latter.

Debut album from Lake People out now

Debut album from Lake People out now
09.02.2015

Martin Enke aka Lake People has just released his debut album 'Purposely Uncertain Field' on Permanent Vacation.

On “Purposely Uncertain Field“ Lake People doesn’t fall into the trap of repeating himself or recreating a successful formula. Instead he puts all his musical knowledge and his experience into the eleven tracks of the album and expands his already rich sound universe. Above his straighter dancefloor aspects Martin elaborates his approaches to a certain mid 90’s electronica vibe and ambient-like soundscapes with a very cinematic feel to it. Thus he brilliantly manages the difficult task of creating a transcendent and consistent album without losing any tension over the full length.

New EP from Lawrence

New EP from Lawrence
06.02.2015

Hamburg-based producer (and force behind many reputable labels) Peter M. Kersten will release a new EP as Lawrence via his own Smallville imprint next month. Titled 'Manhattan', the record appears to find Lawrence continuing to trade in the crisp and focused strain of house-meets-techno-meets-ambient productions with which he has built up his following over the years.
While no exact release date has been set for 'Manhattan', the record is set to arrive sometime in March. In the meantime, Smallville has provided preview streams of all three EP tracks, which can be heard below.

Max Graef to tour North America

Max Graef to tour North America
03.02.2015

Max Graef will mount a spring tour of North America beginning March 19th.

The sometime Oye Records clerk and jazz/funk obsessive has built a sturdy following around his laidback house sound. RA lent its Recommended status to his debut full-length Rivers Of The Red Planet after featuring Graef as part of our Breaking Through series. Since then, the Berlin wunderkind has launched Money $ex Records, a label focusing on jazz, house and hip-hop run in collaboration with Glenn Astro and Delfonic.

In keeping with this collaborative spirit, Graef will bring shadowy '50s obsessed duo CTEPEO '57 along for the tour. The caravan starts at Chicago's Primary club on March 19th. He'll then bounce around the East Coast and Midwest with gigs in D.C., Detroit and Miami. The West Coast leg starts at The Wherehouse in Tijuana. Graef and CTEPEO will then appear at the Far Away party in LA before heading to the all-night Hot Mass event in Pittsburgh. They'll also play at the Panther Room in Brooklyn's Output club before wrapping with a pair of Canadian dates.

March 19.: Primary, Chicago
March 20.: Eighteenth Street Lounge, Washington DC
March 21.: The Grasshopper Underground, Detroit
March 25.: TBA, Miami
March 26.: The Wherehouse, Tijuana / Mexico
March 27.: Jewel's Catch One, Los Angeles
March 28.: Hot Mass, Pittsburgh
April 2.: The Panther Room, Brooklyn
April 3.: Le Belury-Bar a Vinyle, Montreal / Canada
April 4.: Wrongbar, Toronto / Canada
