Crack Mix 189 - Pional

Crack Mix 189 - Pional
09.02.2018

Along with peer and collaborator John Talabot, Pional was part of a clutch of electronic artists who gained popularity in the early 10s for an intoxicating blend of aqueous house and airy disco. As a DJ, vocalist and producer, he takes an almost scientific approach to performing and creating – prioritising atmosphere over genre constraints and finding washed-out textures in the negative space between the beats.

As he readies new music to unveil later on this year, Pional put together a kaleidoscopic voyage through astral dancefloor sounds and alien melodies for our mix series. The 90-minute offering demonstrates that the sound he’s best associated with is still intact – emotive synth throbs and heady polyrhythms warping typical dancefloor blueprints. But there are more abstract moments and unexpected turns which show he’s far from sitting still.

Demdike Stare's DDS label reissues album from Move D's Conjoint group
07.02.2018

The five-piece future jazz project's 2000 LP is out again tomorrow.
The first move for Demdike Stare's DDS label in 2018 is a remastered reissue of Conjoint's 2000 album, Earprints.
Conjoint was a five-man outfit founded by David Moufang, AKA Move D. It also featured prolific pianist and vibraphone player Karl Berger—who worked alongside jazz greats like Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry, to name only two—along with Jonas Grossmann, Jamie Hodge and Gunter Kraus. The group pushed their own expansive brand of future jazz and downtempo across three LPs.
They originally released Earprints, their collaboration-heavy second effort, via Moufang and Grossmann's Source Records imprint, enlisting guests like Andrew Pekler and Kai Kroker for appearances.
DDS is now giving the album its first ever reissue tomorrow, on both double-vinyl and digital formats. "If you're into late-night listening and have followed the work of Move D, Miles Davis, Tortoise or Jan Jelinek's frayed, late night jazz minimalism," the label says, "This one's for you."
Listen to Earprints cut "The Joint." here.

Premiere: O-Wells - Park Jit - Inverted Audio
06.02.2018

Last year Frankfurt-based imprint Die Orakel, run by Robert Johnson’s musical curator Oliver Hafenbauer, launched a dystopian triptych series named ‘Orakel X-Files’. The first string of releases shed a different light on Orson Wells, Christopher Rau and Pablo Mateo, who plunged themselves into the realms of avant-garde techno.

Having released the first of the series, Orson Wells returns to Die Orakel with a three track banger named ‘Presents Frankfurt Bass‘ – ranging from spacey downbeat breaks to futuristic electro. Our pick “Park Jit” showcases electro in full power: a twangy vocal introduces the waspish bassline bouncing on a pokey acidic synth. Vanishing digit sounds bestow the track with spatiality, letting the machines in control of the stretching kick. “Park Jit” could easily turn the Robert Johnson upside down when the light is already out and Francesco del Garda is at the decks.

Check it out here.
