Gerd Janson

Info

Gerd Janson is one of the most highly respected DJs in the world of house and techno. Quite often, “highly respected” goes hand-in-hand with “underrated” but over the past few years, audiences around the world have also found out what insider types already knew: Janson is a DJ that reconfigures the classics you already knew in an unexpected way – and introduce you to new classics, a few months (or years) before you’ll hear them played everywhere else.

Raised just outside of Frankfurt, Janson came to dance music at a young age. He found himself traveling around the country to see heroes both local and international Masters at Work. Moodymann. Robert Hood. Techno. House. The style didn’t matter. He was hooked.

This genre-free philosophy been a theme throughout Janson’s career. House and techno have been an underlying theme, but listening to his DJ sets, you’ll often hear different types of things filtering through: UK funky, synth pop, industrial.

Janson is one of the most modest DJs you’ll find, and in spite of that he has held down a residency at Frankfurt’s Robert-Johnson club since 2000. Together with his partner in crime, Thomas Hammann, he has brought artists like Theo Parrish, Kenny Dixon Jr. and Maurice Fulton to the club. In 2010 Janson & Hammann compiled a Robert Johnson CD which made it to Resident Advisor's list of Best Compilations of 2010.

In 2013 alone, Janson played gigs in Australia, Brazil, Israel, Japan, Singapore and all over Europe and he also became a resident at Berlin’s Panorama Bar and Trouw in Amsterdam, as well as still holding the fort at Robert Johnson.
In 2013, he was named de:bug’s #2 DJ of the year, #8 in Groove Magazine and he was also in the Top 50 on Resident Advisor Top 100 DJ List.

Besides dj'ing, Janson is also the brain behind the Running Back label. He has released a number of highly acclaimed artists such as Tensnake, Todd Terje, Maurice Fulton, Theo Parrish, Suzanne Kraft, Redshape and many others. Speaking of being eclectic.

In addition to his work with Running Back, Janson has also teamed up with Philip Lauer under the Tuff City Kids alias. Originally taken on as a remix project, the partnership has quickly evolved to include original productions for labels like Unterton and Delsin.
It is similar in many ways to Janson’s work as both a DJ and a label boss – it’s the type of stuff that sneaks up on you. Quality, without being flashy. Wonderful, without announcing itself as such.

In short, Gerd Janson is one of the increasingly worst kept secrets in the world of dance music. A DJ versatile enough to rock just about any dance floor. A DJ who cares about the profession of DJ. A DJ worth hearing.

Gerd Janson mixes fabric89

Gerd Janson mixes fabric89
28.06.2016

The Running Back boss includes tunes from Traumprinz, John Talabot and Joe Claussell in his 16-track selection.

Gerd Janson has mixed fabric 89, which is coming out August 19th.

"Recording mixes is always very painful for me—especially if I know that someone is going to spend money on it," says the Running Back founder. "My self-confidence as a DJ is at gutter level, and doing one for fabric, as part of a series amongst the best of the best, is quite intimidating. Plus, it's a club, so I shied away from my tried-and-tested mixtape method of boring people for the first 74 minutes. I ended up choosing some records that I played and enjoyed a lot over the last few months in a party context, mingled them with some exclusives and up-and-coming ones and tried to eternise the valleys and the mountains of a 12-hour-long epic journey onto one silver disc."

Janson opens his mix with Luke Abbott's remix of "Snooze 4 Love" by Todd Terje, before working his way through 15 more tunes by the likes of Traumprinz, Joe Claussell and HMC. Dotted around the tracklist are exclusives from John Talabot, Shan, Boddika & Joy Orbison and Prins Thomas.

You can hear clips over at the fabric website. The launch party is happening at fabric on Saturday, July 30th, with Janson joined in room one by Radio Slave and Scott Grooves. Tickets are available here on RA.

Tracklist
01. Todd Terje - Snooze 4 Love (Luke Abbott Remix)
02. John Talabot - Voices (fabric Edit)
03. Traumprinz - Love Yeah
04. Shan - The City Never Sleeps
05. Boddika & Joy Orbison - Severed Seven
06. Mateo Murphy - Apex
07. Geeeman - Wanna Go Bang (Catz 'N Dogz Edit)
08. Q-Burns Abstract Message - Mess Of Afros (Glenn Underground Remix)
09. Inner Sense - MoTP
10. Mike Ash - Return To Acid
11. Nick Höppner - Relate (The Black Madonna Remix)
12. HMC - Marauder
13. Joe Claussell - Rhythm
14. Roger Van Lunteren - Hills, I Want You
15. Scott Grooves - Finished
16. Caribou - Sun (Prins Thomas Diskomiks)

Fabric Records will release fabric 89 on August 19th, 2016.

Gerd Janson’s remix comes out 27th may 2016

Gerd Janson’s remix comes out 27th may 2016
26.05.2016

Kasper Bjørke’s re-focus on dance floor music on his upcoming ‘Fountain of Youth’ Mini-LP (out June 10th) continues with this exceptional, second remix part of the single Cloud 9.
Running Back labelboss Gerd Janson’s rework is a deep acid jam, just including a hint of the original vocals (performed by Urdur from Icelandic GusGus) and completely recontextualizing the source material, with its razor sharp rave synth theme. With its numerous twists and turns, Janson has created a timeless anthem.
Gerd Janson’s ‘Mood Swing Dub’ is the final addition to the digital single package, featuring remixes from Marvin & Guy (Hivern Discs) and Weval (Kompakt), and is accompanied here by the Original Instrumental Mix - taken from the forthcoming Mini-LP.

Westbam classic gets reissued and remixed

Westbam classic gets reissued and remixed
19.02.2015

Smallpeople and Gerd Janson have been tapped to remix the 2002 cut.

A new label called Fuck Reality will reissue Westbam's "Oldschool Baby (Piano Mix)" with remixes from Smallpeople and Gerd Janson.

Several versions of "Oldschool Baby" were released in 2002, but the "Piano Mix" is the best known. Physical copies of the track, which features vocals from Nena Kerner, are extremely rare, making it one of the most sought-after Westbam cuts ever produced. The German was a key player in the rise of Berlin techno (he organised the first Berlin Mayday rave, and frequently played at seminal venues UFO and E-Werk), and though he remains fairly detached from the city's club circuit today, Westbam's influence over electronic music in Germany remains.

The forthcoming package features a remastered version of "Oldschool Baby (Piano Mix)", along with reworks from Smallpeople and Gerd Janson. Samples are streaming here.

XLR8R Podcast 365: Gerd Janson

XLR8R Podcast 365: Gerd Janson
22.10.2014

Gerd Janson is often referred to as a "DJ's DJ," but that term doesn't really do the man justice. Perhaps there was a time where the Running Back label founder, who many people still recognize as "that guy from all the Red Bull Music Academy interviews," was regarded as some sort of underappreciated DJ commodity, but over the past few years, he's transcended that notion, in the process becoming one of the most respected DJs on the planet.
Janson has long been celebrated for his residency at Frankfurt's famed Robert Johnson club, but he's also been added to the stable at Berghain/Panorama Bar and Trouw; it seems that all of Europe's best clubs are after his services.

Gerd Janson recorded Podcast no. 365 for XLR8R, listen to it here.

Gerd Janson announces US tour

Gerd Janson announces US tour
13.10.2014

The Running Back head and Tuff City Kids member will hit the states in October.

Revered DJ Gerd Janson will make his second trip to the states later this month, beginning his visit in Los Angeles on October 24th.

Gerd recently announced the 50th release on Running Back—the Leaves EP by Redshape—and has maintained a busy touring schedule, most recently playing back-to-back with Move D for nearly eight hours in Paris.

He'll start things off with a bang in LA, playing a lineup concocted by Red Bull Music Academy and polysexual clubbing mainstay A Club Called Rhonda. The tenth event in the energy drink giant's "This City Belongs To Us" series will take place in a private location, requires RSVP, and will be headlined by Seth Troxler and Guy Gerber. RBMA is involved in the following night's SF gig as well. He'll spin at As You Like It with Optimo and Running Back's Suzanne Kraft.

For his Chicago gig, Gerd will visit Smart Bar's weekly gay party, Queen!, with Derrick Carter and Garrett David. The following Thursday, he'll hit Stereo Bar in Montreal before traveling to Output's Halloween show in Brooklyn. For the New York gig, Danny Tenaglia will headline the main club while Janson and Kaspar Bjørke share duties in the adjacent Panther Room. He'll wrap things up on the first of November with a Toronto date alongside Mind Against.

Running Back marks 50th EP release

Running Back marks 50th EP release
26.09.2014

A four-track EP "on the monolithic techno tip" is set for release on Gerd Janson's label next month.

Running Back's 50th catalog number belongs to a new Redshape EP set for release next month.

Discogs obsessives may note that Gerd Janson's label reached release number 50 some time ago—albums are counted separately from EPs, and they've often tweaked the numbering for special releases. (Son Of Sam's Nature Makes A Mistake, taken from a cassette released in 1984, skipped ahead to catalog number RB084; a recent EP from Mutsumi, a co-release with Maurice Fulton's BubbleTease Communications, was stamped with RBBT-1.)
Reaching RB050 is a milestone nevertheless, and as a regular on the label, the perennially masked producer is an apt choice for the occasion. The record is called Leaves, and the title cut features in four versions. Running Back says it finds Redshape "back on the monolithic techno tip" with "the sort of warehouse rave signal that exceeds the sole purpose of a tool."

Tracklist
A1 Leaves (Original)
A2 Leaves (Stripped 2 Clip)
B1 Leaves (Rotated Mix)
B2 Leaves (Stripped 2 Clip & 303)

Running Back will release Leaves on October 20th, 2014.

RA Exchange 178: Gerd Janson

RA Exchange 178: Gerd Janson
14.12.2013

Gerd Janson gets his brain picked by Resident Advisor for the RA Exchange series.

"The Running Back boss charts the course of his singular passion.

Gerd Janson is a man of many trades: at various times over the course of his career, he's been a music journalist, a top-flight DJ and the proprietor of one of dance music's best labels. Whatever hat he's wearing, though, it's always in the service of a deep-seeded love for club music and the culture surrounding it. Even as his profile has risen over the last few years, he continues to bring that passion to Running Back's releases, DJ sets and productions with his group Tuff City Kids. Based outside of Frankfurt, Janson swings through Berlin often to play, and on a recent jaunt, we had him by our office to talk about writing, reissues and the funny name he almost gave Running Back."

Gerd Janson is resident of the month at Trouw, Amsterdam and in that connection a very special podcast of his has been made available to the public.

This October mix, "New Music For Old People", was recorded such a long time ago that even the internet lost it. Friends of Gerd found it on their vintage hard drive and general laziness allowed it to be used by the good people from Trouw.

Listen to the mix here.

Gerd Janson live at Nachtdigital 2013
29.08.2013

Gerd Janson's set from Nachtdigital 2013 was recorded and you can listen to it at the RBMA Radio website (link below).

Allow us to quote the good people at RBMA Radio;

"Gerd Janson is the original Endor blender, touched with the ability to unearth treasured discs that make music lovers’ eyebrows arch and hips dip. A treasured member of the RBMA team, he is a busy purveyor of good times and tastes around the world.
One half of the studio duo Tuff City Kids with Phillip Lauer, Janson has kept it consistently bubblin’ over the years at his Liquid party at Robert Johnson in Offenbach.
Formerly a frequent writer for Groove and Spex magazines, he can now mostly be found hanging out at juice bars and airport departure lounges on the international DJ circuit, when he isn’t putting out records by Move D, Radio Slave, Tensnake and the like on his own Running Back label. The voice from planet love speaks."
