Magic Mountain High

Info

What a supergroup. Move D and Juju & Jordash, tearing up the scene each on their own, forms Magic Mountain High together.

Move D as well as Juju & Jordash (whose current album dropped like a nuclear bomb on some reviewers, leaving nothing but astonishment behind) have a very distinct knowlege about analogue synthesizers and other hardware equipment. So, thinking that the analogue way is the most fun way to produce, it was only natural for them to try out a new concept, mixing house with jazz, techno with funk, in an overall analoguely improvised and highly entertaining project.

Magic Mountain High never disappoints.

Magic Mountain High live at Dekmantel Festival

Magic Mountain High live at Dekmantel Festival
28.08.2014

When Magic Mountain High performed live at this year's Dekmantel festival, the show was recorded and you can now listen to it via RBMA Radio.

The trio of Move D and Juju & Jordash make up the improvising group Magic Mountain High. For each one of them, improvisation is more than just creating something on the spot: it informs their whole attitude to live performance and music making.
In this day and age of pre-programmed laptop sets, Magic Mountain High aim to bring the moment back to the dancefloor, capturing the artistry back from convenience and giving the dancers something they can cherish. Stripping each set down to the bare essentials, the group use a changing combination of synths, drum machines and effects, and then perform on the fly, each time something different.
After jamming at Move D’s studio, the trio really came together for good when both parties were asked to perform the soundtrack to 1920s cult film Der Golem. They decided to do it together and have been surprising themselves at various venues and festivals ever since.

Listen to the set here.

Move D gears up for North American tour

Move D gears up for North American tour
06.05.2014

Move D has lined up a 12-show tour of North America that starts later this month.

It looks to be a very busy trip for the charismatic selector formally known as David Moufang, with the bookings all set for a barely-two-and-a-half week period. He'll favour the western side of the continent this time around, starting the tour with a four-night run across the West Coast. Seattle is first on Thursday the 15th, followed by Vancouver, San Francisco (where Moufang will share the decks with UK duo Optimo for an extended set) and Los Angeles (where another UK outfit, Horse Meat Disco, is confirmed).

Then there's appearances in Phoenix, El Paso and Austin, before the trail leads Moufang to Detroit for Movement Festival: he'll play the festival proper on Sunday the 25th, and the next day he'll play an official afterparty called Closer which also features Kompakt man Michael Mayer, fabric resident Daniel Avery and the Motor City's own Marcellus Pittman.

The next weekend has Moufang hitting Brooklyn for a night of live performances at The Bunker. He'll jam with Juju & Jordash as Magic Mountain High, and two more eclectic European favorites, Shackleton and Kangding Ray, are on that lineup as well. Over the following two days, Moufang will wind down his tour at EM15 in Montreal. Another Magic Mountain High set is in the works there, and to finish things off, he's billed with Rome's Donato Dozzy for a Piknic event the afternoon of Sunday, June 1st.

Tickets to the shows in San Francisco, LA, Detroit (for the Closer party) and Brooklyn are available on Resident Advisor.

May 15 - Q Nightclub, Washington State
May 16 - Open Studios, Vancouver
May 17 - Public Works, California (North)
May 18 - Sadie Kitchen & Lounge, California (South)
May 21 - Barsmith Phoenix, Arizona
May 22 - 1914 Lounge, Texas
May 23 - Kingdom Nightclub, Texas
May 25 - Movement 2014, Hart Plaza, Detroit Michigan
May 26 - As You Like It & Safe: Closer, TV Lounge, Detroit Michigan
May 30 - The Wick, New York (Magic Mountain High)
May 31 - EM 15 - Mutek, Montreal (Magic Mountain High)
Jun 01 - Piknic Electronik - Mutek, Parc Jean-Drapeau, Montreal

Magic Mountain High gets love from XLR8R

Magic Mountain High gets love from XLR8R
27.08.2013

UK-based music website XLR8R attended the Dekmantel Festival outside Amsterdam last weekend, and it seems like they had a good time - allow us to quote:

"Magic Mountain High was too good.

...a lot of highlights, one of which was Magic Mountain High....

Just watching the trio diligently assemble propulsive bits of house and techno was entertaining, not to mention impressive, as the three producers worked in unison to construct nuanced, multi-layered compositions completely on the fly. It could be said that the music was "deep"—and there was certainly a stoney, vaguely psychedelic tinge to the proceedings—but Magic Mountain High also built a solid groove, intermittently weaving in elements of acid and techno to boost everyone's energy level. Despite all the technical nerdery happening on stage, the set was undeniably musical, and the dancefloor responded enthusiastically."

Read the full review / feature (and some serious praising for Gerd Janson) here.
