Max Graef

Info

It's easy to hear Max Graef's music as a collection of influences. There's Berlin, his hometown, where playing records feels as natural as riding a bike. There's his love of live instruments, built through the years he's spent playing them. And then there's house music and the funk, soul, disco, jazz and hip-hop that feed into it—all of which bleed together at Oye Records, the record shop in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg that may as well be Max's living room.
As a producer, DJ and now bandleader, he embodies all of the above. Yet no matter how many facts you know about Max, his music still catches you off-guard—what he's grabbed out of the ether is freely available, but the maturity and inventiveness he strings it together with couldn't have come from anyone else.

His sound first came together, oddly enough, during the one part of his life he didn't live in Berlin—he spent two years at school in London, where he didn't quite connect with his younger peers and found ample time to learn his way around production. Back home, his MPC-led tunes found a home on the shelves at Oye, often appearing on collaborative EPs on Box Aus Holz, his label.
His first album, Rivers of the Red Planet, found release through Tartelet in 2014 and met with immediate acclaim.

Fully formed and worn-in yet bursting with spontaneity, the record made good on the infectious, eclectic and out-of-time feel of his first singles, and it brought Max and his wildly eclectic record bag to clubs and festivals around the world.
He's not merely settling in, though. Max's latest project finds him not behind turntables but on stage playing bass with his eponymous five-piece live band, which brings his music even closer to the loose, organic feel of the records he cherishes.

He's also launched Money $ex Records this year with fellow traveler Glenn Astro and Delfonic.

Max Graef is putting out a record through Apron

Max Graef is putting out a record through Apron
22.09.2016

The label, run by Funkineven, is having quite a year so far. In addition to releasing its founder's well-received debut album, Apron has also issued records from John T. Gast, L.M.Y.E., Brassfoot and others. The latest signing is Berlin producer Max Graef, the Ninja Tune affiliate most often associated with a hip-hop-influenced, often downtempo sound. Apron EP is a little different, with heavier drums and a more straightforward approach—or, as the label says in a brief press release, "the rawest you'll ever hear Max." Listen to the preview of "Purpurner Nürnwurz" here

Max Graef to tour North America

Max Graef to tour North America
03.02.2015

Max Graef will mount a spring tour of North America beginning March 19th.

The sometime Oye Records clerk and jazz/funk obsessive has built a sturdy following around his laidback house sound. RA lent its Recommended status to his debut full-length Rivers Of The Red Planet after featuring Graef as part of our Breaking Through series. Since then, the Berlin wunderkind has launched Money $ex Records, a label focusing on jazz, house and hip-hop run in collaboration with Glenn Astro and Delfonic.

In keeping with this collaborative spirit, Graef will bring shadowy '50s obsessed duo CTEPEO '57 along for the tour. The caravan starts at Chicago's Primary club on March 19th. He'll then bounce around the East Coast and Midwest with gigs in D.C., Detroit and Miami. The West Coast leg starts at The Wherehouse in Tijuana. Graef and CTEPEO will then appear at the Far Away party in LA before heading to the all-night Hot Mass event in Pittsburgh. They'll also play at the Panther Room in Brooklyn's Output club before wrapping with a pair of Canadian dates.

March 19.: Primary, Chicago
March 20.: Eighteenth Street Lounge, Washington DC
March 21.: The Grasshopper Underground, Detroit
March 25.: TBA, Miami
March 26.: The Wherehouse, Tijuana / Mexico
March 27.: Jewel's Catch One, Los Angeles
March 28.: Hot Mass, Pittsburgh
April 2.: The Panther Room, Brooklyn
April 3.: Le Belury-Bar a Vinyle, Montreal / Canada
April 4.: Wrongbar, Toronto / Canada

10.11.2014

The young Berlin star is booked for shows in Australia and New Zealand this month.

Max Graef will head to Australia and New Zealand this November.

It begins with a show at Something Else, the recently relaunched Saturday night at Sydney's Burdekin Hotel, on November 22nd with Charades guests Tom Witheridge & U-Khan and Ben Fester & Steven Sullivan on support.
The following day he'll head to the Victorian bush for a set at Strawberry Fields, then he jumps across the Tasman to play at The Monday Room in Christchurch on the 28th and a Sextrade party in Auckland with Frank Booker on the 29th. From there he pops back over to Australia for one last gig with Wollongong's Parkside crew on November 30th at Hotel Illawarra.

His eclectic sound is surely a product of his love for crate-digging—Berliners often spot the likable and unassuming talent lurking in the city’s beloved OYE record store, where he works one day a week. All of this gives us more than enough reason to pay him a visit in Berlin in his kiez.

New album from Max Graef on the way

New album from Max Graef on the way
01.02.2014

Max Graef will release his first album on April 7. 2014 on Tartelet Records.

'Rivers of the Red Planet', Graef's first full-length album, takes all the wildness and refines, expands, updates and scrambles it. It's as ambitious and deviously entertaining a record as you'll hear in 2014, the fulfillment of Graef's desire to make anything but another contemporary house music album.
At any given moment, 'Rivers of the Red Planet' feels like it could have been recorded through the smoke at a jazz club in the booth at a techno club 30 years from now or inside an MPC stocked with crusty dollar-bin samples.
If it sounds sampled, it's a testament to Graef's natural musicianship and production prowess—the record is heavy on sounds he played himself, from drums and Rhodes to fat synth melodies wrung out of an old Crumar Performer water-damaged to perfection. For vocals, Graef enlisted Nigerian singer Wayne Snow, whose rugged soulfulness makes him a natural pairing. On cuts like "Drums Of Death" and "Speed Metal Jesus," the club-readiness of his EPs lives on. But Rivers of the Red Planet may be most at home in your living room, with a good bottle of red and a roaring fire's crackles mixing with the pops and hiss of the vinyl—a playful listen that sinks in, burrowing deep and getting you all warm and gooey on the inside.

Pre-listen to album snippets here.

Also - check out the brand new video for the track "Running" feat. Wayne Snow! It is featured on Dazed Digital, find it here.

Max Graef joins Magnet Musik!

Max Graef joins Magnet Musik!
01.10.2013

We are happy to introduce our new artist Max Graef!

Max Graef is Berlin born and raised, a prime example of the new generation of young producers emerging at the moment. His output is mature and well rounded, juggling everything from house, hip-hop & bass to indefinable hybrids of in-between.
His own label “Box Aus Holz” is fast becoming a hub for upcoming producers focussing on raw house & disco. Besides releasing on his own imprint, Max is signed to Tartelet Records, where his debut album will be released in March 2014.
Furthermore Max has releases on Heist (Detroit Swindle), Melbourne Deepcast, Sleazy Beats and The Gym and will be featured on the upcoming DJ Kicks (!K7) mixed by Brandt Brauer Frick.

Find out more about Max Graef on his Facebook page or on Soundcloud.

Max Graef is also a one half of the project CTEPEO '57 together with Muff Deep.

CTEPEO '57 (aka STEREO '57) is a newly formed duo. They have been around for a while and you might know them under different aliases, though... Their obsession with 1950s culture brought them together and they own a massive collection of Marlon Brando memorabilia.

The 1950s was a decade of mystery and hoaxes; the cold war, the space race and the establishment of NASA. CTEPEO ’57 insists the cold war isn’t over and claim that Russian astronauts landed on Mars in the late 90s to discover something truly amazing... It all seems far-fetched but who cares, when they make music like this.

You can download the track 'Space Race' for free on XLR8R here.
