Info

Move D, aka David Moufang, is one of modern electronic music’s most beloved souls with a long and varied musical history with roots in 60s and 70s jazz, psychedelic, rock, soul and early electronica.

Making his first appearance on vinyl as part of a school bands competition in 1983, it was only another four years before he started toying with the medium as a DJ, playing funk, soul, hip-hop and proto-house.
In the 90s things began to move fast with the inception of his Source Records imprint, early productions (including the debut Move D LP ‘Kunststoff’ – Source Records, 1994) and the beginnings of a 26 album relationship with close friend, the late Pete Namlook. Since then, Moufang has become an unassuming heavyweight in house music as a producer for countless forward thinking labels, a collaborator and a truly original selector.

His discography is long and impressive and holds releases on a broad variety of labels such as Source, Modern Love, Workshop, Smallville, Warp, Running Back, Uzuri and Electric Minds among others plus collaborations and involvements in projects like Magic Mountain High (w. Juju & Jordash) and Reagenz (w. Jonah Sharp).

Not one to slack off, his live and dj performances have been on par with (if not superior to) his studio work, pulling from all corners of his diverse catalogue in order to create an experience that attacks the hips and head in equal measure.
His releases touch on house conventions but are delivered in his own inimitable style, leaving everyone - from long time fans to the uninitiated - with their jaws on the floor and their hands in the air.

Nextup Throwback in conversation with Move D
23.09.2016

Move D has been involved in the underground scene for over 20 years, and his discography speaks for itself. As part of a newly-emerging ‘ambient techno’ scene in the 90’s, he has collaborated with Pete Namlook, Jonah Sharp and more recently, leftfield techno pair Juju & Jordash, under the name Magic Mountain High. "Nextup Throwback" spoke to him about his 2005 side project with Kai Kroker, Studio Pankow, how he started out, what his journey has been like and what has changed since he first started DJing.

This is a low-key, late night funkadelic house anthem from Magic Mountain High. Presented in the classic 12" tradition, with an original mix as well as Acapella, Club Dub, and (courtesy of Move D) Remix versions, this demented ode to mindflight exhales a bit of humor over the room, but also penetrates the dome with its lush, single-lightbulb groove and insane effected vocal manifesto. Reagenz return with The Periodic Table

Reagenz return with The Periodic Table
24.09.2014

Move D and Jonah Sharp's next album is an edited-down live recording from January 2013.

Reagenz will release their third full-length on November 11th.

The collaboration between Heidelberg's David Moufang (AKA Move D) and San Francisco's Jonah Sharp dates back 20 years, with the duo's debut self-titled album landing all the back in 1994. They reformed in 2009 with an LP on Workshop and have since been performing live together somewhat regularly. Their latest effort, The Periodic Table, chronicles one of those performances, taken from The Bunker New York's tenth anniversary party in January of last year. It's also the first full-length release for the label of the same name.

The 70-minute album was cut down from a largely improvised two-and-a-half hour show, incorporating "elements of house, techno and ambient in an organic flow" according to the press release. The Periodic Table was recorded with the same equipment used for Reagenz in 1994, with a Roland TR-909, TR-606, SH-101, AKAI MPC 1000 and Moog MidiMurf among the many machines used.

Move D gears up for North American tour

Move D gears up for North American tour
06.05.2014

Move D has lined up a 12-show tour of North America that starts later this month.

It looks to be a very busy trip for the charismatic selector formally known as David Moufang, with the bookings all set for a barely-two-and-a-half week period. He'll favour the western side of the continent this time around, starting the tour with a four-night run across the West Coast. Seattle is first on Thursday the 15th, followed by Vancouver, San Francisco (where Moufang will share the decks with UK duo Optimo for an extended set) and Los Angeles (where another UK outfit, Horse Meat Disco, is confirmed).

Then there's appearances in Phoenix, El Paso and Austin, before the trail leads Moufang to Detroit for Movement Festival: he'll play the festival proper on Sunday the 25th, and the next day he'll play an official afterparty called Closer which also features Kompakt man Michael Mayer, fabric resident Daniel Avery and the Motor City's own Marcellus Pittman.

The next weekend has Moufang hitting Brooklyn for a night of live performances at The Bunker. He'll jam with Juju & Jordash as Magic Mountain High, and two more eclectic European favorites, Shackleton and Kangding Ray, are on that lineup as well. Over the following two days, Moufang will wind down his tour at EM15 in Montreal. Another Magic Mountain High set is in the works there, and to finish things off, he's billed with Rome's Donato Dozzy for a Piknic event the afternoon of Sunday, June 1st.

Tickets to the shows in San Francisco, LA, Detroit (for the Closer party) and Brooklyn are available on Resident Advisor.

May 15 - Q Nightclub, Washington State
May 16 - Open Studios, Vancouver
May 17 - Public Works, California (North)
May 18 - Sadie Kitchen & Lounge, California (South)
May 21 - Barsmith Phoenix, Arizona
May 22 - 1914 Lounge, Texas
May 23 - Kingdom Nightclub, Texas
May 25 - Movement 2014, Hart Plaza, Detroit Michigan
May 26 - As You Like It & Safe: Closer, TV Lounge, Detroit Michigan
May 30 - The Wick, New York (Magic Mountain High)
May 31 - EM 15 - Mutek, Montreal (Magic Mountain High)

RA Exchange 187: Move D

RA Exchange 187: Move D
21.02.2014

"David Moufang, or Move D as you might know him, is a cult favorite in house music, and it's not hard to see why. His DJ style is fun-loving but classy, as perfect for a house party as it is for a festival. His productions, meanwhile, are more subtle and spaced out, earning him respect among synth nerds and techno connoisseurs. And he's always played very well with others, from his early joint-efforts with the late Pete Namlook to his current work with Juju & Jordash as Magic Mountain High. By now Moufang's been doing his thing for more than 20 years. During a recent stop-over in Berlin, he shared some of the perspective he picked up along the way and spoke at length about a musical friendship that's influenced him deeply."

Move D mixes fabric 74

Move D mixes fabric 74
29.01.2014

Move D's fabric 74 mix will see release on February 24th.

David Moufang says the mix's inspiration came from his sets at Freerotation — near-spiritual events that brought him to tears a couple of years back. His tracklist avoids big-name artists, with the focus on overlooked gems like Roy Davis Jr.'s "Under Tha Sun" (which opens the mix) alongside material from modern day favourites like Juju & Jordash and Smallpeople. There's also an unreleased track from Moufang himself called "Luvbyrds."

"The first time I heard about fabric was through an old friend, Peter (Baby) Ford — it must have been the early 2000s — way before I ever got booked to play there," Moufang says. "He told me about fabric being the only good club left in London, supporting the underground scene, which by its nature made the event something very special to me, and it still is. Playing Room One or Room Three in fabric is quite an experience for every DJ—the same most likely counts for Room Two too, I just never happened to play there myself."

The launch party will take place at fabric on February 22nd, with Move D set to spin alongside Craig Richards, Juju & Jordash and more.

Tracklist
01. Roy Davis Jr. - Under Tha Sun
02. Liz Torres - Your Love is All I Need (Dub Mix)
03. Liberty City - Some Lovin’
04. M.ono - Holding Back California
05. Jamie Trench & Angus Jefford - Bringin’ Tha Heat
06. Earl Jeffers - The Goose
07. Darkman - Annihilating Rhythm (The Destruction Mix)
08. MD III - Shake That Body (K-Alexi Dubs You The Right Way Mix)
09. Dom 877 - Do It Right
10. Juju & Jordash - Loosey Goosey
11. Christo - New Jazzno
12. Last Magpie - Roots
13. Move D / D-Man - Luvbyrds
14. Willow - Feel Me
15. Smallpeople & Rau - Unke

Move D preps The Silent Orbiter

Move D preps The Silent Orbiter
02.10.2013

David Moufang will release an ambient album in honour of his friend Pete Namlook, who died last year. The album is entitled 'The Silent Orbiter' and will contain only one, 54 minutes long, track.
It will be released in December 2013 on the label txt and it is a personal tribute to his friend and collaborator Pete Namlook, who passed away in November 2012

Though he's best known these days for his house-centric productions as Move D, Moufang has a long association with ambient music that dates back to the early '90s through his own productions and the Source Records imprint that he ran with Jonas Grossmann.

Get an idea of what The Silent Orbiter sounds like via a three-minute clip on txt's SoundCloud page.

Move D's KM20 Tapes to be released

Move D's KM20 Tapes to be released
23.08.2013

A collection of unreleased Move D tracks from the mid-'90s will feature on the second Off Minor release.

The Off Minor label was launched by Juju & Jordash's Jordan Czamanski back in June with a two-track solo EP from Czamanski under the name Jordan GCZ. The KM20 Tapes features five tracks produced by Move D in his KM20 Studio in Heidelberg between 1992 and 1996. The pair have a close working relationship—together they form two-thirds of Magic Mountain High alongside Czamanski's Juju & Jordash partner Gal Aner.

According to Czamanski, the release will mark the start of an irregular series that unearths Move D material from the vaults. "David gave me access to a ton of dope tracks that he transferred from tape, so I'm going to start pressing up these EPs from time to time," he told Resident Advisor.

For an idea of what to expect, check this YouTube teaser video.
