John Talabot: Pitchfork's 9 best DJ mixes of July 2018

John Talabot: Pitchfork's 9 best DJ mixes of July 2018
01.08.2018

Some DJ sets feel supercharged with purpose. Sometimes it has to do with meeting the dancefloor’s demands; other times, that motivation is more cryptic, if every bit as palpable. In the case of John Talabot’s latest for Beats in Space, perhaps it’s the slow tempo that reveals its keen sense of focus. Beginning with languid, shuffling breakbeats and steadily, stealthily dialing up the pace, the beats march slowly and deliberately forward. After an hour, he has barely broken the 100-BPM mark, and the further he presses on through pensive, echo-soaked new wave disco and cosmic house, the heavier the anticipation looms. Teased by minor-key arpeggios, murky voiceovers, and the occasional flash of acid squelch and dub delay, you keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it never does. Distrustful of anything as obvious as a climax, the Barcelona DJ leaves us hanging until the very end. Radio sets rarely feel as carefully thought out.

Dekmantel Podcast 187 - Magic Teapot

Dekmantel Podcast 187 - Magic Teapot
24.07.2018

Magic Teapot Records is an exclusive online record store in Barcelona, but also a recently launched record label (run by Daniel Baughman— A&R at Hivern Discs, booker at audiophile venue Nica —, Marco Gegenheimer - who releases on Studio Barnhus as MLiR - and Jens Ingelstedt). The DJ duo though is made up of Baughman and Gegenheimer, and when they come together they unleash hidden vinyl gems that get you dancing and romancing. Their sound is one that has a lot to say and draws on steamy tropical delights and intoxicating world music that could be thirty years old or brand new.

This mix for Dekmantel is a 90 minute live recording of them doing what they do best at Nica, namely taking us around the globe on a real adventure that has a sense of musical wanderlust running right through it. Listen to it HERE.

INIT-STEREOMETRIC GAMES EP

INIT-STEREOMETRIC GAMES EP
17.07.2018

"Benedikt Frey and Naia d’Alò's Init project received great initial praise through two well conceived pieces for John Talabot's Hivern disco back in 2015. Now the pair are back on Les Disques De La Mort with a four track EP rich with their moody techno delights.

"Stereometric" sees a swollen electric base gently plume as ghostly vox and slowly eroding artefacts are scattered through the mix; landing somewhere between Bay Area minimal wave and the taut techno meanderings of Marcel Dettman.

"Nuts" is an anthemic slice of darkwave electro; tense, a little bit menacing and cinematic as hell - conjuring images of late night mutant car chases through guttural cityscapes.

"Wheels" sees us dive down smacked-out electro-post-punk rabbit hole; landing in a drug stained bedsit around Hulme Crescents circa '89 with next doors party still in full swing two days since it began.

"Mindwork" invites said neighboring crusties to an all-night post-Goa-trance rave up on some moonlit beach and populated by shady drug dealers and Mad Max type characters all locked into its full-throttle stomp. "

Listen here to the tracks.

BENEDIKT FREY - Artificial (Remixed) - Vinyl/Digital EP

BENEDIKT FREY - Artificial (Remixed) - Vinyl/Digital EP
09.07.2018

In 2017, Benedikt Frey released his breathtaking debut album with the ESP Institute, 'Artificial', and now as we finally come up for air, we’re more than proud to offer an eclectic collection of remixes that’s nothing short of essential. Side A leads with 'H For Hysteria' remixed by a beloved hero, Nicolas Chaix a.k.a. I:Cube, one of the most prolific and respected electronic artists Paris has to offer. His touch is considered and elegant, imbuing the track with a tasteful 303+808 backbone to support an array of patiently floating melodies and angelic vocal samples. Following this, Tolouse Low Trax of Düsseldorf’s infamous Salon Des Amateurs remixes the same track, stripping instrumentation down to a skeletal palette of bass guitar and stabbing percussive punctuations, chopped up inna minimalist stylee that has become his beat-making signature. Side B leads with a remix by another Düsseldorfer, DJ Normal 4, whose re-imagination of 'Private Crimes' takes us for an even more menacing ride, half-timing the tempo and skillfully rolling out an barrage of jungle snares from rave days of yore. Closing the release is the most aggressive remix of them all, a bonafide techno beatdown of the same track by DALO, the co-producing artist to whose haunting vocals lace the original version. Her dark vision opens with sparse industrial drums that blossom into a driving assault of raw machinery, definitely not for the faint-of-heart. An all-around solid release here, fun for all the family… more than just the tip! Get your copy here.
