Helena Hauff über ihre exklusive Mix-CD
19.06.2018

Inklusive Chinaski's Totleben.

Cleveland's new 12" out now via ESP Institute
11.06.2018

Cleveland is forever in search of the brown note. This is his second offering for the ESP Institute. Side A’s 'Tusk' is a beautiful paradox—rhythm programs that churn like the inner workings of a grandfather clock, unmistakably mechanical, yet fashioned through muted analogue instrumentation that paints a deceptively organic picture. The crystallized jangle of FM synth voices toy with the softened drum patterns and vibrant animal-like chord gestures over nearly seven minutes of splendor. On side B, 'Aku' digs further into mysticism, manifesting digital jungle themes, cleverly abstracted through erratic bleeps, distant tribal drums, atonal flutters and synthetic bird calls. The cinematic quality of Cleveland's production shines through both tracks, but its 'Aku' that sweeps us from reality to embark on a moonlit expedition in search long lost treasures, proving Cleveland a virtuoso skilled in building complex narratives with sound. These two songs will modulate your frequencies.

Most Likely to Confuse Anxious Ravers: Eva Geist:

“I really wish she would play something faster,” moaned a woman in a British accent, her face pained as she shifted back and forth. “She’s Italian,” explained her boyfriend, as if that explained everything. The culprit was Berlin’s Eva Geist, who was at the moment entrancing the beachside Desperados stage—well, except for a desperate few—with a slow, slippery take on coldwave techno touched up with acid and faintly arabesque melodies. It was a mysterious sound and a fine fit for the hour after sunset, a neat way of washing away the daytime vibes and wading into the penumbra. –Philip Sherburne

Video Premiere - Benedikt Frey

Video Premiere - Benedikt Frey
06.06.2018

Music Video: Benedikt Frey – Looking Back

Inverted Audio:
Since his debut in 2010 with the “Escape / Indica” EP for Aldebaran, Benedikt Frey has made a name for himself as a prolific producer and DJ with a penchant for absorbingly psychedelic mid-tempo grooves that have a tendency to envelop you entirely. His expansive discography is a testament to his wide-ranging talents, with releases spread across a wealth of respected imprints such as Mule Electronic, Hivern Discs, ESP Institute and his own label, Love Pain Sunshine & Rain.

His latest effort sees the German producer return to Live At Robert Johnson and marks his first 12″ for the Robert Johnson crew since 2015’s “Reframe“. Following on from a banner year in 2017 in which Frey shared two EPs and a debut full-length for ESP Institute, “New Now” continues his hot streak with a three-part exploration of rhythm and mood that veers between tempi, never settling in one place for too long.

We’re glad to be sharing an exclusive premiere today of the video for the record’s opening track, “Looking Back“. An animated video with a minimalist aesthetic, it features a clock-like figure that perpetually revolves. As the clock turns, skittering percussion and rising chords urge the track forward, conjuring a deeply hypnotic vibe and painting the perfect backdrop for that glorious lead synthesizer to slowly unfold in waves of shimmering resonance.

New Now is scheduled for release 8th June 2018, order a copy from the Robert Johnson Online Shop.

Check out the video here.

Move D, aka David Moufang, is one of modern electronic music’s most beloved souls with a long and varied musical history with roots in 60s and 70s jazz, psychedelic, rock, soul and early electronica.

Making his first appearance on vinyl as part of a school bands competition in 1983, it was only another four years before he started toying with the medium as a DJ, playing funk, soul, hip-hop and proto-house.
In the 90s things began to move fast with the inception of his Source Records imprint, early productions (including the debut Move D LP ‘Kunststoff’ – Source Records, 1994) and the beginnings of a 26 album relationship with close friend, the late Pete Namlook. Since then, Moufang has become an unassuming heavyweight in house music as a producer for countless forward thinking labels, a collaborator and a truly original selector.

His discography is long and impressive and holds releases on a broad variety of labels such as Source, Modern Love, Workshop, Smallville, Warp, Running Back, Uzuri and Electric Minds among others plus collaborations and involvements in projects like Magic Mountain High (w. Juju & Jordash) and Reagenz (w. Jonah Sharp).

Not one to slack off, his live and dj performances have been on par with (if not superior to) his studio work, pulling from all corners of his diverse catalogue in order to create an experience that attacks the hips and head in equal measure.
His releases touch on house conventions but are delivered in his own inimitable style, leaving everyone - from long time fans to the uninitiated - with their jaws on the floor and their hands in the air.

Info

Ata is the daddy mac of both the club- and label Robert Johnson plus the house kingpin there. Upon returning to Frankfurt from a life-altering club night in Barcelona, he decided that he wanted to be a DJ, and has since come a long way – from his early days at Delirium record store, unforgettable nights at the Omen or his seminal Wild Pitch Club.

Since then Ata has co-founded the (very nearly holy) trinity of the Playhouse, Klang and Ongaku labels and the now legendary Robert Johnson club in Offenbach, a landmark in Europe’s club scene ever since its inception.

Amongst all this it would be easy to forget that he is still a DJ at the prime of his powers if it weren’t for his marathon sets that still have the power to turn lives around.

Because let's face it: There are more DJs in the world than basil leaves in Liguria and they come in all sizes, shapes and colors. Despite the latest developments and modern hotchpotch like laptop-deejaying there still is this almost metaphysical little extra pinch that's so hard to describe and that separates the wheat from the chaff. And for that Ata is a prime example.
How exactly this man manages to fascinate when stoically spinning records for hours on end, mixing emotion and intention, guiding the crowd is his secret. We may assume it is experience.

Info

Isolée is Rajko Mueller, born in Frankfurt/Main.

Rajko was bored by synth-pop and EBM in the end of the eighties and listened more to rock and independent music. Friends made him discover house-music, hip-hop and techno in the early 90ies. He restarted to copy this on his old syntheziser and soon realized the need of more equipment.

After the landmark LP »REST« it took 5 years to maturate a successor. Rajko moved to Hamburg and well in 2005 the time had come and »WE ARE MONSTER« (Playhouse) drew massive critical acclaim from The New York Times over Pitchfork Media unto all those music magazines you read. It became one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year.

In 2011, he released his third full-lenght album "Well Spent Youth" via DJ Koze's Label Pampa.

Info

John Talabot has become one of the biggest revelations of the last years.
He has gone from a complete unknown to one of the biggest electronic hopes in Spain. All thanks to his effusive house tracks in which Moodymann, J Dilla, Chicago house, Disco music and Northern Soul intertwine to produce organic and humane songs, full of life, and that make your hands and heart dance.

His debut album "Fin" on Permanent Vacation was one of the most highly praised records of 2012 and his DJ Kicks release for K7! in 2013 received much critical acclaim.

Gerd Janson

09.09.2013

Gerd Janson has put together an unmixed compilation of previously unreleased tracks for Rush Hour. Most featured artists, including Move D, Roman Flügel, Âme, Tom Trago and Tensnake contributed more mellow sounds than we usually get to hear from them, resulting in an overall kosmische-esnpired feel.
