Most Likely to Confuse Anxious Ravers: Eva Geist:

“I really wish she would play something faster,” moaned a woman in a British accent, her face pained as she shifted back and forth. “She’s Italian,” explained her boyfriend, as if that explained everything. The culprit was Berlin’s Eva Geist, who was at the moment entrancing the beachside Desperados stage—well, except for a desperate few—with a slow, slippery take on coldwave techno touched up with acid and faintly arabesque melodies. It was a mysterious sound and a fine fit for the hour after sunset, a neat way of washing away the daytime vibes and wading into the penumbra. –Philip Sherburne

Video Premiere - Benedikt Frey

Video Premiere - Benedikt Frey

Music Video: Benedikt Frey – Looking Back

Inverted Audio:
Since his debut in 2010 with the “Escape / Indica” EP for Aldebaran, Benedikt Frey has made a name for himself as a prolific producer and DJ with a penchant for absorbingly psychedelic mid-tempo grooves that have a tendency to envelop you entirely. His expansive discography is a testament to his wide-ranging talents, with releases spread across a wealth of respected imprints such as Mule Electronic, Hivern Discs, ESP Institute and his own label, Love Pain Sunshine & Rain.

His latest effort sees the German producer return to Live At Robert Johnson and marks his first 12″ for the Robert Johnson crew since 2015’s “Reframe“. Following on from a banner year in 2017 in which Frey shared two EPs and a debut full-length for ESP Institute, “New Now” continues his hot streak with a three-part exploration of rhythm and mood that veers between tempi, never settling in one place for too long.

We’re glad to be sharing an exclusive premiere today of the video for the record’s opening track, “Looking Back“. An animated video with a minimalist aesthetic, it features a clock-like figure that perpetually revolves. As the clock turns, skittering percussion and rising chords urge the track forward, conjuring a deeply hypnotic vibe and painting the perfect backdrop for that glorious lead synthesizer to slowly unfold in waves of shimmering resonance.

New Now is scheduled for release 8th June 2018, order a copy from the Robert Johnson Online Shop.

Check out the video here.

XLR8R Podcast 543: Lawrence

XLR8R Podcast 543: Lawrence
23.05.2018

Lawrence is Peter M. Kersten, the much-loved DJ, producer and Dial label head. Growing up in Hamburg, Germany, he heard his first house track in 1987, namely Mr. Fingers' "Can You Feel It," and became enchanted with the "strange minimal loop, with no song structure and the melancholic deepness," he recalls in an earlier RA interview. "I had never heard anything like it before. Scouring through Lawrence's discography, and it's apparent that Larry Heard's 1988 number formed something of a sonic blueprint for Kersten's sumptuous deep house and techno sound. Check out his Podcast for XLR8R.

FAMILY HORROR X GOOD TIMES

FAMILY HORROR X GOOD TIMES
22.05.2018

‘Family Horror X Good Times’ is an extensive 15 tracks compilation, where the label reflects on an intense and impassioned decade. We asked close friends and long time idols to play their part to the full to complete the third edition of the label’s Family Horror compilation series. The outcome is a clear snapshot of the musical inclinations of the three label founders, Sevensol & Map.ache (aka Manamana) and Bender, encapsulating an idiosyncratic, modern house sound that demands an emotional response.
The compilation comes rounded off by a booklet of photographs from Ria aka Lux which just like the music captures some of the beautiful ‘Good Times’ from this very special period, this time on paper. Including tracks from Lawrence, Matt Karmil and many more. Here is the link to get your copy.
